The inspiration for the picture, as always, was our wonderful planet, my admiration for the cultures of different peoples. My respect for the keepers of legends and beliefs, signs and parables. In this case, the idea came thanks to an acquaintance with the ethnic performer Iya Mekkyusyarova, an expert in folklore of the Republic of Sakha Yakutia.
But this picture is also all about love.
The painting depicts a dark sky with flashes of the Northern Lights; among the peoples of the north this is considered a harbinger of spring. The appearance of eagles is also considered a sign of imminent spring, so the silhouette of eagle wings can be seen in the sky. Eagle wings are usually depicted on the back of the bride's wedding fur coat. When the huge red sun appears above the horizon for the first time, after about two months of darkness, it is greeted with celebration. This usually occurs at the end of January, the ground is still frozen into stone and there are no obvious signs of spring. But people know that the sun has appeared, which means sooner or later it will begin to warm up and a magical summer will come with its polar day, warmth and wealth.
On this day, people celebrate the sun, which looks truly gigantic for those few minutes when it appears above the horizon. People dance and sing, play music and compete in national sports. The girls flaunt embroidered dresses and heavy silver jewelry. They perform various rituals, make wishes for love, for a rich life. Many rituals help maintain health in constant cold conditions, for example, wiping with snow. The young beauty Yarkhat in the picture has pinkish skin, as if flushed from being rubbed with the last snow. And she hugs the flowers of dream grass, which are a symbol of spring, to attract happiness and spring into her life. The beauty is sad because she didn’t get married this winter, which means she’ll have to wait for the next one. Traditionally, in Yakutia, winter weddings were universal entertainment; there is a lot of “wedding time” in winter.
