Madonna with flower
Tempera on canvas. 2022. Dia. 30 cm
The first painting with this name was made by me in 1991 on a 24x16 canvas with oil paints. The idea of the composition is so simple and familiar - a girl looks at a flower. What could be simpler? But in our picture there is not just a girl - Madonna. The Mother of God, as a symbol, also has the meaning of Mother Nature, matter, creator and receptacle of everything that exists on Earth. The angle of the face and hand gesture indicate attention focused on some object. Attention is one of the greatest gifts that nature has endowed man with, because by paying attention to any subject in due measure, a person can solve the most complex problems. While studying, realize the nature of things, realize the interrelationships of events and physical factors and, as a result, invent something new. For absolutely any action, a primary impulse of attention is required - interest in the subject, careful examination of its structure, integration of the subject into one’s system of awareness of the world - identification. It was this process that attracted me back in 1991 and inspired me to create the painting “Madonna with a Flower”
In November of 1993, the painting participated in the exhibition “Invitation to Journey” by the group of artists “Union of African Figures” at the 1st City Hospital, on Leninsky Prospekt, in Moscow. The opening of the exhibition was quite fun and successful, there were a lot of people and they even wrote about it in the newspapers. Imagine our surprise when, having arrived to remove the paintings at the end of the exhibition, we saw an empty space where two works should have been... My “Madonna with a Flower” and “There was War in Heaven” by Mikhail Astafiev, also known as Methodius, mysteriously disappeared from the closed room... What to do? We asked around. Nobody saw anything... It’s still unknown where they disappeared, or rather, who took them. It would be very interesting to know.
And recently I was presented a round canvas and I suddenly remembered that painting and decided to paint a work in tempera based on it. Of course it is round, not rectangular, painted in tempera, not oil. Much thinner, and in a slightly different color combination. But this doesn’t change the meaning, the point is that time is a person’s most valuable resource. Therefore, attention to any object is a voluntary application of the most valuable energy; it breathes life into any object.
Madonna, the creator in the picture, is inspired by the beauty of the flower, which makes roses “bloom” on her cheeks. The flower, in response to the energy of attention, reveals the secrets of its structure, filling the attentive creator with new ideas. The position of the eyes, hands, colors and patterns - everything is not accidental in this picture. Every attentive viewer will notice and be able to unravel the patterns hidden in the picture. And the most attentive ones may even find a proof of the most famous geometric theorem.
